UAE Mandates AI Education Across All Government Schools from K-12 Starting 2025
The UAE Cabinet has approved the nationwide implementation of a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum for all government school students, from Kindergarten through Grade 12, starting in the 2025 academic year. This groundbreaking federal mandate, announced by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to equip the next generation with essential AI skills and ethical understanding.
Nationwide AI Curriculum Rollout
This initiative marks a significant step, making the UAE one of only a handful of countries globally (alongside China, which also plans a rollout starting September 2025) to mandate AI education across its entire K-12 government school system. While individual emirates and private schools have previously launched AI initiatives, this represents the first federal mandate for government schools, impacting approximately 300,000 students. The UAE Ministry of Education will oversee the implementation.
Curriculum Details and Development Partners
The comprehensive AI curriculum is being developed in collaboration with leading technology and educational institutions: Presight (a G42 Group company), AI71, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), and the Emirates College for Advanced Education. It focuses on building both technical competencies and a strong ethical foundation, covering seven key areas:
Foundational AI concepts
Data and algorithms
Software use and applications
Ethical awareness and considerations
Real-world AI applications
Innovation and project design
Policies and community engagement
Age-Specific Learning and Integration
The curriculum features tailored units designed for different age groups to ensure effective learning:
Kindergarten: Introduction to AI and digital technologies through interactive activities, stories, and play.
Cycle 1: Comparing machines and humans, developing digital thinking skills, exploring AI applications.
Cycle 2: Designing and evaluating AI systems, learning about bias and algorithms, focusing on ethical AI use.
Cycle 3: Preparing for higher education and careers, including topics like command engineering and real-world scenario simulation.
Importantly, AI literacy will be embedded across multiple subjects, promoting interdisciplinary understanding. The new curriculum will be integrated into existing school schedules within the "Computing, Creative Design, and Innovation" subject, requiring no additional teaching hours.
Teacher Training and Support
Recognizing the crucial role of educators, the Ministry of Education will implement intensive training programs for teachers responsible for delivering the AI curriculum. Comprehensive guides, activity plans, models, and adaptable lesson plans will also be provided to support classroom implementation.
Strategic Importance for UAE's Future
This nationwide AI education drive is a core component of the UAE's national strategy to embed digital economy skills and future-proof its education system. It builds upon successful past initiatives like the National Programme for Coders and the AI Summer Camps. The overarching goal is to equip youth with the mindset, skills, and awareness necessary to thrive in a technology-driven world and position the UAE as a global AI hub, in line with the UAE AI Strategy 2031.
Looking Ahead
The UAE's commitment to embedding AI education from kindergarten onwards sets a significant regional and potentially global benchmark. This foundational investment in human capital is designed to ensure the nation's youth are not just consumers of technology but active participants and innovators in the future AI landscape.
